| FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS
FPS games are characterized by a
first person view in some sort of warfare environment. The ones that
interested me were multi-player and that incorporated objectives. This
objective driven game demands team work more than just uber shooting skills.
Although available on both PC and consoles,
I found console controls for FPS rather cumbersome. Epic Games had led
the way, mostly with their Unreal series, but have now forsaken the PC
market in favor of consoles, where the money is, apparently

In the world of consoles, Rockstar
has it all sewn up. Easily the most natural real life environment
engine set against stunning graphics, awesome physics and ... well ...
violence.
Of course these games do not force you
to be violent. The game still excels if you wish to sight see and
test drive vehicles and helicopters. Right.

Athough UT2k7 never caught on, the Unreal
series has always been a front runner in
the FPS arena. Take a look at what
was a great time waster a few years back for me.
UNREAL TOURNAMENT by
Epic Games
Enemy Territory was first developed
as an add-on for Return to Castle Wolfenstein but when the deal fell through
the developers released it as a stand alone free game. Amazingly
this game still has a huge online fan base.
It is a WWII style game where players
adopt a unique class which allows them to contribute in different ways.
i.e. Medics can revive fallen players, soldiers have access to unique weapons
and can call in airstrikes, Engineers are the only ones who can plant explosives
and lay down mines, Spies can reveal enemy mines as well as appear as an
opposite side member and gain access to locked doors. |
